Octoberfest Volunteer FAQ’S

What is Octoberfest?

For more than 25 years, Octoberfest has been a community event filled with games, food, music and activities for families. Businesses and individuals from Grafton and beyond donate their time, products and ideas to make it a great day. It is the largest fundraiser for the SGPTO which supports both Millbury Street Elementary School and South Grafton Elementary School. Above all, it is a family day of fun with activities for all ages.

Where does the money raised go?

The past few years, Octoberfest has raised over $20,000 per year, which has helped to fund enrichment programs for the children of both SGES & MSES. They include author visits, field trips, Zoomobile, Capen Hill Nature Sanctuary and much more. Due to budgetary constraints, many of these programs could not exist without this fundraising event.

Don’t you have enough volunteers?

No. There is so much to do; we could find a place for every child’s parent! We need 200 volunteers! We are often scrambling at the last minute to adequately staff all areas. We are particularly in need of volunteers for the 2 shifts during the event, from 10:00 am – 12:30 pm and 12:30 pm – 3:00 pm.

What do I have to do if I volunteer?

Depending on where you are assigned, you may be asked to collect tickets, serve food, run a game or assist kids with an activity or craft. If you have ever put food on a plate or opened a jar of glitter glue, then we have a place for you!

How long do I have to volunteer for?

We are looking for volunteers to work 2 ½ hour shifts. You can volunteer for 1 or more shifts. If you are willing to help with preparations prior to Octoberfest, contact the Volunteer Coordinators. We now have some shorter shifts for the Magic Show and Food.

What if I have a preference of where I’d like to volunteer?

If you sign up online at you can choose the time and area that you would like to work at. Simply click on the “Sign Up” button, input some basic info, and you’re all done.

I have small children with no one to watch them. How can I volunteer?

You are welcome to bring them with you, in most cases. Children, especially preschoolers, love to help out, collecting tickets, handing out prizes, etc. Let the Volunteer Chairperson or the activity chairperson know when you sign up if you will have small children with you, so you can be assigned to an area that will accommodate kids or strollers. Or, find a friend or neighbor in the same predicament and sign up for different shifts, so you can kid-swap.

How can I spend the day with my family if I’m volunteering?

You can sign up for a 2 ½ hour shift and still enjoy Octoberfest before and after your shift. And kids love to see their parents at the booths; they feel proud and important. It’s actually “cool” at this age!

Are there any other benefits to volunteering?

Yes! Each person who volunteers for one or more shifts will receive 10 tickets for games and activities at Octoberfest.

O.K. I’m in. How do I sign up?

Easy! Go to the online volunteer sign up and choose your time and activity!  On the day of the event, simply check in at the front door of SGES to receive your name badge and 10 tickets, and find out where your area is located. Once there, your chairperson or co-workers will let you know what you need to do.
